History
The Great Northern Union is an internationally recognized, auditioned men's a cappella chorus. While based in Minneapolis, the GNU draws members from the tri-state area and numbers 60 men strong. We bring audiences out of their seats by delivering emotionally charged messages in a high impact a cappella style. The GNU sings a wide variety of musical styles with repertoire ranging from traditional barbershop, patriotic and spiritual to jazz, swing, classical and pop. The GNU was founded in 1985 with the goal of becoming one of the best men's chorus' in the nation and having an outrageously good time doing so.
The GNU is an active member of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) and the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America (CASA). Recently the latest GNU recording, It's A Grand Night For Singing, was nominated for a CARA Award (Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award) for best barbershop album and best barbershop song (When The Midnight Choo Choo Leaves For Alabam'). This is the 2nd GNU album nominated for the CARA Awards.
The GNU produces and performs in concerts all around the Upper Midwest. Our style of music is a sure audience pleaser, combining precise close harmony, exciting choreography and the ability to reach our audience in our music. The GNU performs at events ranging from pre-game and half-time shows for major league sports teams, to corporate events, charitable and arts benefits, to clinics and workshops in schools and churches throughout our region.
